The APA guidelines state that any content that was created using a generative AI tool should be cited, and how the tool was used, whether it was summarizing, paraphrasing, editing, or translating, should be acknowledged. APA recommends describing how the AI tool was used in a text, either in the introduction or the method section of the paper. Citing AI should occur both internally as in-text parenthetical citations and on the reference page.
You can directly read the APA guidelines for citing generative AI at the APA-style website.

Here is APA's guide to applying its citation template for reference pages to AI-generated content.
APA reference entries for AI usage should include these elements in this order of placement:
Here is an example of an APA reference page citation of AI-generated text created using ChatGPT:
OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat |

In text citations should follow the normal APA format of (Author, Date). For AI-generated text, the author as explained above, is the creator of the AI model. So for text generated using ChatGPT, OpenAI should be listed as the author.
Here's an example of an internal citation for AI-generated text created using ChatGPT:
When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notion that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023). |
