Primary sources are first-hand evidence of a historical topic. Examples of primary sources include

  • novels,
  • poems,
  • autobiographies,
  • letters,
  • diaries or journals,
  • photographs, and
  • social media posts.

Secondary sources are documents used to analyze, interpret, or study a historical event or period after such had occurred. They often refer to the primary source. Examples of secondary sources include

  • peer reviewed articles,
  • scholarly books,
  • government reports, and
  • documentary films.
